Chapter 11

Cade did an about-face, almost crashing into Deputy Lockhart. He was listening to Trooper Canton on his cell phone. He wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings since he answered the call.

“Sheriff, I need you to take this call on line two. It’s that annoying D.A. And there is someone from the Marshal’s Service on line one. They say it’s very important.” Sally shouted at Cade’s retreating back.

Lockhart stepped aside and turn to follow the Sheriff. “What’s going on?”

Cade put a hand over the cellphone and said, “Get in your car and go to the red barn on fifty-two. Code three.” Lockhart nodded and ran to his parked unit in the front of the building.

Cade made his way to his car, continuing to speak with Trooper Canton. “Why didn’t you stop her? You’re there to protect her, even from herself.”

“With all due respect, sir, Miss Smith has a mind of her own. She was insistent. The other one egged her on.”

Canton’s words came through the phone crystal clear, especially the ones he didn’t actually speak. He hinted that Mary was a handful and Lana wasn’t helping matters with her personality, which could seem, at times, extremely abrasive and cavalier.

“Okay. I am on my way. Try to slow them down. They already have a big head start.” Cade didn’t wait for a response. He put his phone on his belt and got in his car. He needed to decrease the women’s head start. He put on his lights and siren and went speeding after Lockhart.

Mary didn’t know how she was doing it or why she was able to do it. But she was seeing definite signs of someone using the trail recently. Sudden mental images flooded her head. She could identify the trees, the vegetation, the harmless and the harmful. She knew she was heading West without knowing why she was so positive about her direction. Instinctively she knew the signs she saw would not have been there to see or track if they were older than a few days.

Mary paused at the word track. That’s precisely what she was doing. She was tracking someone in the woods, reasonably deep woods with a moderate trail. Wait! How did she know that? Mary nodded to herself as she picked up other telltale signs that the trail was moderate instead of beginner or advanced. The trail was just a bit too much for beginners and not enough, far too easy for someone of advanced level.

Mary’s footsteps increased as she saw sign after sign of someone making a mad dash through some of the bushes. Her confidence rose, and she picked up even more speed when more visible signs showed something had happened in the woods.

Following her leads, Mary went off the trail, entering the denser and less used section of the trail.

“Hey, wait!” Lana panted out.

Mary hadn’t realized the gap between her, Lana, and Trooper Canton had steadily increased. Ignoring Lana, choosing to not stop, Mary continued on, following her instincts. Her instincts told her that something happened on the trail and continued into the much thicker, unruly bushes.
